The “home base” of the operating system is the desktop. The desktop appears when the computer finishes starting up.
On the desktop, there are several small graphics or pictures known as icons. The desktop may contain many icons representing a variety of things: a folder containing documents, a hard drive, a program, or a single computer file.
Across the bottom of the screen is the taskbar. Even if an open program or document covers the entire desktop, the taskbar remains visible. Microsoft Windows is so named because several programs and/or documents can be open at one time, each in its own window. The taskbar displays the number of windows currently open.
